Coherence Therapy* is a method of dispelling long-lasting psychological problems and symptoms at their roots in far fewer sessions than conventional in-depth therapies requires.
It was developed by psychotherapists Bruce Ecker, LMFT and Laurel Hulley, MA in the 1990’s and grew out of their detailed observation of the processes that lead to deep and profound change.
The name Coherence Therapy reflects the guiding principle of the approach which is the complete coherence of the unconscious knowings, meanings and feelings that often underlie pervasive symptoms.
In traditional psychotherapy symptoms have often been viewed as irrational, i.e. something to counteract or correct. Coherence therapy goes beyond this one-sided position to connect with the emotional knowledge, often acquired during periods of high emotion, that fuels present day difficulties. When this knowledge is fully integrated and owned alongside more recent experience it opens the way to deep and lasting change.
This transformative process observed in the therapy room is paralleled by the discovery by neuro-scientists in 1997-2000 of memory reconsolidation, which can be described as the brains own rules for change.
My training in this modality has greatly influenced the way that i work with clients in general. I am now able to offer Coherence Therapy as a bespoke method of change.
